ChatGPT prompts for job search: research, resumes, outreach and prep

6 min readPublished

ChatGPT can cut hours from your job search when you give it specific, structured prompts instead of vague requests.

The prompts below cover four stages: researching roles and companies, writing and tailoring your resume, reaching out to recruiters and hiring managers, and preparing for interviews. Each one includes a template you can paste and edit.

Prompts for researching roles and companies

Before you apply, you need to understand what a role actually involves and whether a company is worth your time. ChatGPT can summarise job descriptions, decode jargon and surface questions you should be asking.

Paste the full job description into ChatGPT and use the prompts below. The more context you give, the more useful the output.

  • "Read this job description and list the five most important skills the employer is looking for. Then tell me which ones are likely to be dealbreakers versus nice-to-haves."
  • "Summarise what this company does, who their main competitors are and what challenges someone in this role is likely to face in the first 90 days."
  • "This posting says 'strong cross-functional collaboration skills'. What does that phrase usually mean in a [software / marketing / finance] context and what examples should I prepare?"
  • "Compare these two job descriptions and tell me which role is a better fit for someone with [your background in two sentences]."

Prompts for writing and tailoring your resume

A generic resume rarely passes applicant tracking systems. You need to mirror the language in each posting and lead with the achievements that matter most to that employer.

Give ChatGPT your existing bullet points and the job description together. Ask it to rewrite, not invent. If a bullet point is not grounded in something you actually did, remove it.

  • "Here are my current resume bullet points for my last role. Here is the job description I am applying to. Rewrite my bullets to match the language in the posting without adding anything I have not told you."
  • "This job description mentions [specific tool or methodology] three times. I have used it but have not mentioned it on my resume. Suggest two bullet points I could add if my experience includes [brief description of what you did]."
  • "Write a two-sentence resume summary for a [job title] with [X years] of experience in [industry], applying for a [target role] at a [company type]."
  • "Identify any words in my resume that are vague or overused in 2026, such as 'results-driven' or 'passionate', and suggest replacements based on the job description."

Prompts for cold outreach to recruiters and hiring managers

A cold message on LinkedIn works best when it is short, specific and gives the reader a reason to reply. Aim for under 75 words. ChatGPT can draft these quickly if you give it the right inputs.

Tell it who you are, who you are messaging, what you want and one specific detail about the company or role. Generic flattery gets ignored.

  • "Write a LinkedIn connection request message under 300 characters from a [your role] who wants to learn more about the [team or department] at [company]. Do not use the phrase 'I came across your profile'."
  • "Write a follow-up message to a recruiter who has not replied after seven days. Keep it under 50 words, polite and direct."
  • "Draft a cold email to a hiring manager for a [job title] role. I have not seen a posting but I know they are expanding their [team]. Include one specific reason I am interested in their work, which is [your reason]."
  • "Rewrite this outreach message so it focuses on what I can offer rather than what I want from them: [paste your draft]."

Prompts for cover letters

Cover letters are still read for senior roles, career changes and applications to smaller employers in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. A good one is three short paragraphs: why this role, why you, what you will do.

Do not ask ChatGPT to write a cover letter from scratch with no input. Give it your resume summary, the job description and one specific thing about the company that genuinely interests you.

  • "Write a cover letter for a [job title] role at [company]. Use this job description: [paste]. Use these facts about my background: [paste three to five bullet points]. Keep it under 250 words and do not use the phrase 'I am excited to apply'."
  • "I am changing careers from [field A] to [field B]. Write a cover letter opening paragraph that frames my transferable skills without apologising for the change."
  • "Edit this cover letter to remove any sentences that repeat what is already on my resume and replace them with something that adds context or shows personality."

Prompts for interview preparation

ChatGPT is useful for generating likely interview questions, practising STAR-format answers and stress-testing your responses before the real conversation.

Feed it the job description and your resume summary so the questions it generates are relevant to the actual role, not generic.

  • "Based on this job description, generate ten interview questions the hiring manager is likely to ask, including at least two behavioural questions and one technical question."
  • "Here is my STAR answer to 'Tell me about a time you managed a difficult stakeholder.' Point out any parts that are vague, too long or missing a clear result."
  • "What questions should I ask at the end of a [job title] interview at a [company size and type] company to show I have done my research?"
  • "I have a case study interview for a [role]. Walk me through a realistic scenario I might face and then give me feedback on my approach after I answer."

Where an AI job agent fits alongside ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a general-purpose tool. It does not know which jobs you are eligible for, cannot apply on your behalf and does not track employer replies. For the application layer, a dedicated tool handles what ChatGPT cannot.

Break-In Bad reads full job postings to check location, visa requirements, time zone and seniority before surfacing a role to you. It scores each match and auto-applies on Greenhouse, Lever, Workday and other employer sites for roles above 75%, with a screenshot as proof. It also writes a tailored resume and cover letter per job from facts you confirm, so the output is grounded in your actual experience rather than invented by a model. You get 50 free credits when you sign up, and credits never expire.

Questions people also ask

Can ChatGPT write a resume for me from scratch?

ChatGPT can produce a resume structure and draft bullet points, but it will invent details if you do not supply them. Always provide your own job titles, dates, responsibilities and achievements, then ask it to improve the language and tailor it to a specific posting.

Is it safe to paste my resume into ChatGPT?

OpenAI uses conversation data to improve its models by default unless you turn off chat history in settings. If your resume contains sensitive information such as your home address or national ID number, remove those details before pasting. Most job seekers find the risk acceptable for the productivity gain.

How specific do my ChatGPT prompts need to be?

The more context you provide, the better the output. A prompt that includes your target role, years of experience, the job description and one or two constraints such as word count or tone will produce a far more useful result than a one-line request like 'write me a cover letter'.
