A strong accountant resume leads with credentials, names the financial systems you work in, and quantifies what your work produced, such as variances caught, audits closed on time, or costs reduced.

Hiring managers in accounting scan for compliance knowledge, software proficiency and evidence that your numbers are reliable. This guide shows you exactly what to include and how to phrase it.

Quick checklist

Pulled from the steps and lists in this guide — work through it as you read.

  • Start with the action verb: Reconciled, Prepared, Audited, Analysed, Implemented, Reduced, Recovered.
  • Add the object and scale: '1,200 monthly journal entries across five legal entities'.
  • State the outcome or standard met: 'with a 99.6% first-pass accuracy rate over 18 months'.
  • Include the tool if it is relevant: 'using Oracle Financials and a custom Power Query dashboard'.
  • CPA (licensed, [State]) or CPA Canada
  • ACA / ACCA / CIMA (UK)

Certifications to list and where to put them

Certifications are often the first filter in accounting roles, so they belong in two places: after your name at the top of the resume and in a dedicated credentials section. Do not bury them only in a work history paragraph.

In the US, the CPA is the most recognised credential and should appear as 'CPA, [State Board]' so recruiters know your licence is active and jurisdiction-specific. In Canada, list 'CPA Canada' and note your provincial body. In the UK, use 'ACA', 'ACCA' or 'CIMA' with the full body name on first mention. In Australia, list 'CA ANZ' or 'CPA Australia' and include your membership number if the job posting requests it.

If you are still completing a qualification, write 'CPA Candidate, expected [month year]' rather than listing it as complete. Misrepresenting status is a common reason offers are rescinded in accounting.

  • CPA (licensed, [State]) or CPA Canada
  • ACA / ACCA / CIMA (UK)
  • CA ANZ / CPA Australia
  • CMA (Certified Management Accountant)
  • CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) for audit-focused roles
  • EA (Enrolled Agent) if the role involves US tax work

Financial systems and software to name explicitly

Applicant tracking systems parse resumes for exact software names. Spelling out the full product name once and then using the common abbreviation is the safest approach.

ERP systems carry the most weight. List the specific module where you have hands-on experience, not just the platform. 'SAP S/4HANA, Accounts Payable module' tells a hiring manager more than 'SAP experience'.

Spreadsheet skills still matter but need context. 'Advanced Excel including VLOOKUP, pivot tables and Power Query' is more useful than 'proficient in Microsoft Office'.

  • ERP: SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Financials, Microsoft Dynamics 365, NetSuite
  • Mid-market: QuickBooks Online, Xero, MYOB (common in Australia)
  • Reporting and BI: Power BI, Tableau, Cognos
  • Tax: Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, CCH Axcess, Sage Tax
  • Audit: TeamMate+, CaseWare, IDEA for data analytics

How to write audit and compliance outcomes

Audit experience is most convincing when it shows scope, finding and resolution. A weak bullet says 'assisted with internal audits'. A strong bullet says 'led quarterly internal audits across three business units, identified 14 control gaps and closed all findings within the 30-day remediation window'.

Compliance outcomes follow the same pattern. Name the standard, describe what you did, and state the result. 'Prepared financial statements in accordance with IFRS 16, reducing lease liability restatement risk ahead of the FY2025 external audit' is specific and verifiable.

If you supported an external audit, note the auditor and the outcome. 'Coordinated year-end close with Deloitte, providing all requested schedules within 48 hours; audit completed with no material findings' is the kind of sentence that stands out.

  • Name the standard: GAAP, IFRS, SOX, ASPE, UK GAAP, AASB
  • State the scope: number of entities, dollar value of transactions reviewed, number of accounts reconciled
  • Give the outcome: clean opinion, zero material weaknesses, on-time filing, cost recovered
  • Include the timeline: 'closed 120-day backlog in six weeks' shows pace as well as accuracy

Quantifying your impact in the work history section

Every bullet in your work history should answer 'so what'. Accountants often undersell because they think their work is process-based rather than outcome-based. It is not.

Think about variance analysis, month-end close speed, error rates, cost savings identified, and tax positions defended. Any of these can become a number.

Use ranges if an exact figure is confidential. 'Managed accounts payable for a portfolio of 200 to 250 vendors' is honest and still informative. Avoid vague phrases like 'large volume' or 'significant savings'.

  1. Start with the action verb: Reconciled, Prepared, Audited, Analysed, Implemented, Reduced, Recovered.
  2. Add the object and scale: '1,200 monthly journal entries across five legal entities'.
  3. State the outcome or standard met: 'with a 99.6% first-pass accuracy rate over 18 months'.
  4. Include the tool if it is relevant: 'using Oracle Financials and a custom Power Query dashboard'.

Resume format and length for accountants

One page is appropriate for fewer than five years of experience. Two pages are standard for senior accountants, controllers and audit managers. Three pages are rarely justified unless you are applying for a director or CFO role with extensive board reporting history.

Use a clean, single-column layout for roles that go through ATS, which is most corporate and public sector roles. A two-column layout can work for boutique firms or roles where a recruiter reads the resume directly, but test it by copying the text into a plain text editor to check that the order makes sense.

Font size should be 10 to 12 points for body text. Section headings at 12 to 14 points. Margins of 0.75 to 1 inch. Save as PDF unless the job posting specifically asks for a Word document, which some government roles in Australia and Canada still do.

Using Break-In Bad to tailor your accounting resume per application

Accounting job postings vary significantly in what they emphasise. A role at a Big Four firm may weight audit methodology and PCAOB knowledge. An industry controller role may focus on ERP ownership and month-end close ownership. Sending the same resume to both reduces your match score on both.

Break-In Bad's AI assistant Omar reads each full job posting, including location, visa requirements and seniority level, then scores your fit. For roles scoring 75 percent or above, she can apply automatically. For roles between 45 and 74 percent, she flags them for your review. If your resume needs work before applying, Omar can enhance it through a short conversation of up to 20 questions, checking every line against what you actually said and keeping your original on file. She then writes a tailored resume and cover letter drawn from facts you have confirmed, and applies on your behalf to Greenhouse, Lever, Workday and other employer sites, with a screenshot as proof of submission.

Questions people also ask

Should an accountant include a summary or objective at the top of their resume?

A two to three sentence professional summary works better than an objective for most accountants because it states what you bring rather than what you want. Include your credential, years of experience and one specific strength, such as 'CPA with eight years in manufacturing cost accounting and a track record of closing month-end within three business days'.

How do I show SOX experience on an accounting resume?

Name the specific SOX sections you worked with, such as Section 302 or 404, and describe your role in the control environment. For example, 'documented and tested 40 key controls under SOX 404, with zero deficiencies noted in the external auditor's reliance testing' is far more useful than 'SOX compliance experience'.

Do accounting recruiters care about GPA on a resume?

GPA is generally relevant only for candidates within two years of graduation and is worth including if it is 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. Once you have a CPA or equivalent credential and two or more years of experience, GPA is typically removed to make room for work history and outcomes.
